Munich Olympic Stadium Upgrades with EPDM & SBR Granules and PU Glue System

2025-10-13

The Munich Olympic Stadium, one of Europe’s most iconic sports venues, recently completed a large-scale renovation project focused on upgrading its athletic track and field surfaces. To enhance performance, durability, and environmental sustainability, the stadium selected a rubber surface system composed of EPDM granules, SBR granules, and high-quality PU glue supplied by QINGDAO LYKANT SPORTS GOODS CO., LTD.

The project aimed to modernize the stadium’s surfaces to meet international athletic standards while reducing long-term maintenance costs. The SBR granules were used as the resilient base layer, providing excellent shock absorption and energy return, which helps reduce impact stress on athletes’ joints. On top of this, a vibrant layer of colored EPDM granules was applied, bonded with premium polyurethane (PU) glue to ensure superior adhesion, elasticity, and weather resistance.

This combination created a seamless, non-slip, and UV-resistant surface that remains stable under varying weather conditions — from summer heat to winter frost. The newly installed surface also offers exceptional drainage performance, making it suitable for year-round training and competitions.

Engineers reported that the EPDM and PU system achieved high tensile strength and abrasion resistance, meeting World Athletics standards. In addition, the use of recycled rubber materials contributes to the stadium’s sustainability goals by reducing waste and promoting environmentally responsible sports construction.

The renovation at the Munich Olympic Stadium demonstrates how advanced EPDM & SBR granule flooring systems can elevate both athletic performance and environmental responsibility. With its improved safety, longevity, and eco-friendly design, this project sets a benchmark for modern stadiums seeking to combine innovation, sustainability, and excellence in sports infrastructure.
